Added Ingredients for Quality and Potency
O, mickle is the powerful grace that lies
In herbs, plants, stones, and their true qualities:
For nought so vile that on the earth doth live
But to the earth some special good doth give.
-William Shakespeare
Of course, the most important active ingredient in CBD products is the CBD itself. The origin, chemical makeup, and production of a specific CBD product contribute to its overall quality.
Medsana uses 99% pure CBD oil in each of our products, but we also include a few natural herbs and extracts for additional health benefits. For example, we add ashwagandha to our CBD Enhanced Energy Gel Caps for a boost in mood and mental clarity.
Medsana believes in transparency, so we’re happy to give details on every single drop of added ingredient. Keep reading to learn more, then check out our full range of THC-free CBD oil products.
Carrier Oil
You’ll notice that MCT oil is listed as an ingredient in our Enhanced Energy Gel Caps, Relaxed Sleep Gel Caps, and in both of our tinctures.
MCT oil is a carrier oil made from a type of fat called a medium-chain triglyceride (hence the abbreviation MCT).
Carrier oils like MCT aren’t an active ingredient in CBD products, but they do improve absorption. This is because CBD is fat-soluble, meaning it dissolves in oil, not water. MCT oil is also fat-soluble, so CBD dissolves in it and is absorbed into the right tissues so your body can use more of it efficiently.
That’s not to mention the potential health benefits of carrier oils themselves. Although more research needs to be done, some studies find that MCT oil may regulate metabolism, help control appetite, and provide extra energy for exercise.
Now that you understand the role of carrier oils, we can dive into the other ingredients added in Medsana CBD products. Keep reading, but don’t forget to peruse the full lineup of THC-free CBD oil products.
Ingredients in Medsana’s CBD Enhanced Energy Gel Caps
Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha is an increasingly popular herb first used in traditional Eastern medicine. Translated from Sanskrit, Ashwagandha means “the smell and strength of a horse.” That name refers to the plant’s earthy aroma and storied ability to make users feel strong, energetic, and capable.
Ashwagandha has been used in traditional Indian, Sri Lankan, and Pakistanian medicine for centuries, earning its place among the most important Ayurvedic herbs. The plant is lauded for its alleged abilities to relieve stress, increase energy, and improve overall mood in users.
Our CBD energy capsules contain Ashwagandha to provide a natural source of long-lasting energy and tranquility.
Astragalus

Astragalus (Huáng Qí) is a plant that has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for centuries. Medicinal Astragalus comes from the root of a legume native to China, Mongolia, and Korea.
Perhaps the most beneficial proponent of Astragalus is that it’s an adaptogen, meaning it helps defend the body against various stressors that can cause illness. The root has special antibacterial, antiviral, and inflammation-reducing properties, making it a powerhouse for immune system support.
And that’s exactly why many people use the root - preventing colds, illnesses, and even as a treatment for damaged immune systems due to chemotherapy or other types of radiation.
To support immune function, Medsana adds Astragalus as an active ingredient in the CBD oil for energy.
Rhodiola

Also known as golden root, rose root, or rosenroot, Rhodiola rosea is an herb traditionally used in Scandinavian and Eastern European medicine.
Its purported benefits are to reduce depression and fatigue and increase exercise performance and mental clarity. Further research is needed, but preliminary studies suggest that Rhodiola can improve feelings of melancholy, as well as reduce fatigue under stressful “burnout” conditions.
We add Rhodiola to our CBD energy gel caps for mental clarity and better brain function.
Ingredients in Medsana’s CBD Lotion
Not every ingredient here qualifies as an active ingredient in CBD lotions, but all serve a specific purpose.
Arnica extract

Arnica is an herb native to Siberia, central Europe, and a few places in North America. Traditionally, arnica was used as a treatment for bruises and muscle aches.
More recently, studies have found that arnica ointments and lotions may be effective in helping reduce symptoms of joint inflammation in the hands and knees, as well as helping manage pain and swelling in areas where it is applied.
Medsana adds arnica extract to our 500mg CBD lotion to relieve pain and inflammation.
Chamomile extract

You may be familiar with chamomile thanks to its acclaim as a natural sedative and sleep-inducing herb.
However, this plant also has inflammation-reducing properties that could be extremely beneficial in helping heal dry, sensitive skin. Studies found that chamomile flavonoids and essential oils (two compounds found in the extract) penetrate deep beneath the skin, allowing for better absorption and action as an inflammation-reducing agent.
Medsana adds chamomile extract to our CBD lotion to increase blood flow, reduce inflammation, and soothe dry, tired skin.
Glycerin
Glycerin is a humectant, meaning it attracts moisture to itself. This makes glycerin one of the most powerful moisturizing ingredients on the market. We add glycerin to our topical CBD lotion for an extra moisture boost.
Octyl palmitate
Octyl palmitate is a solvent and emollient that helps skin retain moisture and feel soft and smooth.
Safflower seed oil

You may have used this product as a cooking oil, but it may also have skin and health benefits, including inflammation-reducing and soothing properties for dry, cracked skin.
Sunflower seed oil

Sunflower seeds are nutrient-dense and carry many possible health benefits. It’s an emollient, so it adds hydration and smooths skin. It also contains several antioxidants, including vitamins A, C, D, E, and K, which fight free radicals and protect skin from UV damage.
Cetearyl alcohol and polysorbate 60
Don’t be put off by the “alcohol” in cetearyl alcohol - this is a natural fat found in plant oils, including coconut and palm. The purpose of this ingredient is to keep the CBD lotion from separating into oil and liquid.
Polysorbate 60 acts in a similar way as an emulsifier (a substance that keeps separate ingredients together). Cetearyl alcohol and polysorbate 60 keep Medsana’s 500mg CBD lotion from separating into oil and liquid.
Phenoxyethanol, diazolidinyl urea, and iodopropynyl butylcarbamate
These chemicals function as preservatives in many different types of cosmetic products and skincare items. They also prevent unwanted pathogens from multiplying within the product (for example, if you use the lotion without washing your hands and introduce bacteria).
Carbomer and triethanolamine
Both carbomer and triethanolamine function as emulsifiers (helps two liquids mix) and thickening agents. Triethanolamine also functions as a pH adjuster.
Sesame seed oil

Sesame oil has plenty of potential health benefits for skin. First, it contains vitamin E, which can protect skin from UV rays, toxins, and other harmful pollutants.
Sesame oil also contains several antioxidants and inflammation-reducing agents, which help soothe sensitive, inflamed skin. Last, its fatty acids keep skin supple, youthful, and hydrated, making this ingredient a strengthening powerhouse for skin.
Jojoba oil
The oil that comes from the nut of the jojoba plant is renowned for its healing properties, particularly with skincare. Jojoba is a humectant, meaning skin is sealed with a protective barrier, helping it retain moisture, which could help prevent acne and dry skin.
Jojoba oil also contains several forms of vitamin E, which is a powerful skin protectant against UV rays, environmental pollutants, and more. Thanks to its powerful antioxidants, this oil may even promote collagen synthesis, although more research is needed.
Olive oil

Yes, olive oil can be used for things other than cooking your dinner. Similar to jojoba and sesame seed oil, olive oil has been found to protect skin from UV rays that cause long-lasting damage. In fact, a study found that olive oil fought off cancer-causing cells in mice that had been exposed to UV rays.
Olive oil also contains lots of skin-loving vitamins, has antioxidant properties, and even fights off bacteria and other microbes.
Soybean oil

Soybean oil is an exceptionally versatile oil that comes from the seeds of the soybean plant. It has high levels of vitamin E, which contains powerful antioxidants that protect against free radicals and helps skin lock in moisture.
Thanks to those high levels of vitamin E, soybean oil may also reduce inflammation, swelling, and redness.
Medsana adds soybean oil to our 500 mg CBD cream for pain to give an extra boost of inflammation-reducing, moisture-loving goodness.
Aloe vera extract

You’ve probably used aloe vera for sunburn relief, but the plant also has several preventive uses that make it a powerhouse for glowing, moisturized skin.
The potent antioxidants, enzymes, and vitamins in aloe vera help moisturize, smooth, and soothe all skin types, including highly sensitive and dry.
Medsana adds aloe vera extract to our CBD lotion to provide intensive natural hydration for an all-around soothing experience.
Ingredients in Medsana’s CBD Relaxed Sleep Gel Caps
The all-natural active ingredients in CBD gel caps for sleep help enhance the quality of rest you get.
Passionflower

Passionflower is a climbing vine native to tropical climes in the southeastern United States and throughout Central and South America.
Many people take passionflower to relieve stress and induce sleep. Studies have found that this plant may be as effective in treating stress as the drug oxazepam, and another study found that passionflower can help improve the quality of sleep in healthy adults.
Medsana adds passionflower to our CBD oil for sleep to help induce a deeper, more peaceful sleep cycle.
Lavender

You’ve probably heard of the benefits of lavender when used in aromatherapy, but what about through ingestion
Research suggests that lavender oil may have inflammation-reducing and antiseptic properties, as well as usefulness in treating stress, insomnia, and related conditions like restlessness.
We add lavender to our CBD gel caps for sleep for its relaxing, spa-like scent, inspiring deep sleep.
Valerian root

Valerian has been used since ancient times to improve sleep quality and encourage feelings of peacefulness and tranquility.
Native to Europe and Asia, this root contains beneficial compounds including antioxidants, isovaleric acid, and valerenic acid, which have been shown to reduce stress and promote restful sleep.
Medsana adds valerian to our CBD products for sleep to help customers achieve healthier sleep patterns and enjoy productive mornings.
Ingredients in Medsana’s CBD Recovery Stick
Beeswax

You mind yours and we’ll mind ours. Just kidding; our 1000mg CBD Recovery Stick is for everyone, and beeswax is one of its main ingredients.
Beeswax is a natural emulsifier (a compound that helps bind ingredients) and is packed with antioxidants and skin-soothing properties. This topical solution has been used as a skin salve since ancient Egyptian times, and evidence suggests it can help soothe the most sensitive skin, as well as improve symptoms of skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis and psoriasis.
Medsana adds beeswax to our CBD roll on stick to help alleviate joint and muscle pain anywhere on the body.
Pure menthol crystal

Menthol crystals come from organic Menthol, which is a substance secreted by the Mentha arvensis plant. Menthol is used in all kinds of products for its pleasant and refreshing aroma, and menthol crystals are a more concentrated form of this substance.
Menthol crystals have a cooling, calming, and moisturizing effect when applied to the skin, and Medsana adds them to our CBD pain relief stick for an extra cooling sensation.
Wintergreen
Researchers found that Gaultheria procumbens (wintergreen oil) may be a safer alternative for low back pain than nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
This is because the main ingredient in wintergreen oil is a compound called methyl salicylate, which is chemically related to aspirin. When applied topically in combination with other ingredients in a cream or roll-on stick, wintergreen oil has analgesic (pain-relieving) properties.
Medsana adds wintergreen to our CBD relief stick for cool and comforting pain relief.
Camphor

Traditionally made by distilling the bark and wood of the camphor tree, this compound can be rubbed on the skin via lotion or roll-on stick for pain and inflammation relief.
Camphor works by increasing blood flow to the affected area, as well as reducing swelling and irritation. You should never ingest camphor, as it is toxic and can have serious side effects.
When applied correctly via a topical solution, however, camphor can be beneficial for healing and pain relief, which is why Medsana adds it to our CBD pain relief stick.
Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus is an evergreen tree native to Australia, but the plant has also been used by Chinese, Indian, and European cultures for centuries in treating a variety of ailments.
Oil from the Eucalyptus globulus tree contains antiseptic, antimicrobial, analgesic, and antioxidant properties. Researchers found that these can help reduce inflammation, kill bacteria, relieve symptoms of the common cold, and reduce joint and muscle pain.
Eucalyptus contains a lot of medical benefits for one plant, not to mention its pleasant scent. Medsana adds eucalyptus oil to our CBD pain stick for natural pain relief and calming sensations.
Shea butter
Shea butter is a fat that comes from the shea tree found in East and West Africa, where it has been used as a moisturizer for centuries.
Shea butter works as an emollient, meaning it may help soften or smooth dry, parched skin. This substance also contains compounds that can reduce swelling, which may help with skin conditions like eczema.
Medsana adds shea butter to our CBD pain relief stick to support soft, healthy, and moisturized skin.
Cocoa butter

Like shea butter, cocoa butter is a type of fat, but this kind comes from cocoa beans that are roasted, stripped, pressed, and turned into a solid.
Cocoa was used by the Aztec and Mayan peoples for more than 3,000 years. Researchers attribute cocoa butter’s healing properties to compounds called phytochemicals, which promote healthy skin.
Cocoa butter is high in fatty acids, which are known to hydrate and plump skin, and its phytochemicals improve blood flow and protect skin against UV damage.
Medsana adds cocoa butter to our CBD stick for pain to promote blood flow and heal tired, dry, and aching skin.
